Safety Tips for Older Adults and People with Disabilities

  • Install and maintain smoke detectors
  • Know two ways out of each room and keep these exits clear
  • Older adults and people with disabilities may need help to escape... PLAN FOR THIS
  • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year
  • Make sure everyone knows where the safe meeting place is outside of the home
  • Keep wheelchairs, eye glasses, hearing aids and phone next to your bed
  • Make sure everyone can hear the alarms, if not, consider a different sound or one with a bed shaker or strobe light

Other Safety Tips You Can Live By

  • Make sure space heaters are plugged directly into a receptacle. Do not use an extension cord or power strip
  • Maintain the space heater the minimum of 3 feet from combustibles (flammable objects)
  • Clean the dryer of lint after each use
  • If you smoke, never smoke in bed.
