Closings and Cancellation status

as of 4/3/2020

The following facilities will be closed and programs suspended until at least May 22nd.


  • All Youth and Adult Athletic programs to include soccer, baseball and softball.  All athletic fields will also be closed during this time.
  • Recreation Centers and programs to include Broadway Recreation Center, The Club “Senior Center,” Handy Recreation Center and Royal Ave Recreation Center.  Rentals may be re-scheduled at a later date.
  • Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum will be closed.  Rentals may be re-scheduled for a later date.
  • All Senior Citizen activities and dances are cancelled at the Club, however, The NACOLG lunch program will continue as follows:
    • Home Bound meals will continue
    • Participants that ride the bus will have their meals delivered to their homes
    • Meals will still be provided by pick up for those that normally drive themselves to the Club.  Sr.’s will need to notify the Club if they plan to pick up their meals.


Non-Closing facilities:

  • Blackberry Trail Golf Course will remain open.
  • Tennis Courts will remain open.
  • Parks and Shelters will remain open.
  • McFarland Campground will remain open.

Anyone close to their Red Cross Lifeguard certification lapsing needs to visit this site to renew.


The City of Florence, AL is looking for lifeguards.  You must become certified by the American Red Cross or the YMCA to apply.

Starting pay for Lifeguards for the 2020 season will be $10.75 per hour.

Lifeguards will be assigned to The Handy Recreation Center Pools and/or the Royal Avenue Center Pools.

Becoming a Lifeguard will reward one with leadership and lifelong skills that are highly sought after in today’s job market.  Past lifeguards now hold successful careers in law enforcement, firefighting, healthcare, business fields and recreation.

Recreation Center rentals:
The center may be reserved for birthday parties, holiday gatherings, anniversary parties, weddings, etc. from the 1rst weekend after Labor Day weekend till the last weekend in April of each year.
Please call (256) 760-6425 to check for availability.  Reservations must be made at the Royal Avenue Recreation Center office.  Cash or Check only is accepted for payment.  The cost is $20.00 per hour with a 2 hour reservation minimum.  No reservations after 10 p.m.  
Sunday reservation hours must be 1-5 p.m. 
Monday evenings through Friday evenings if available 5-10 p.m. only.
Saturdays 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. if available.  No more than 8 hours at a time.

                    Up to 76-100 people….. $225.00 (includes Recreation pool and kiddie pool)         

                    101-300 people… $275.00 (includes Competition pool, Recreation pool and kiddie pool)

Clubs and Organizations that meet at Royal Avenue Recreation Center:

AARP – American Association of Retired Persons. Meets the third Thursday of each month for a covered dish lunch at Royal Ave. Recreation Center from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Bridge – Competitive clubs play on Monday and Wednesdays from 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.  For more information please contact Mr. Cale at

Florence Senior Citizen Center - Non-competitive play on Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Cheer Club – Activities for the mentally and physically challenged. Meets at Royal Ave. Recreation Center the first Monday of the month from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. For more information please call 256-760-6425.

Dulcimer Club – “Friday Fritters” meet at Royal Ave. Recreation Center each Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon. For more information call 256-760-6425.

Music Group - The Music group meets every Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Royal Avenue Recreation Center to practice Gospel, Country and Bluegrass selections.  For more information call 256-760-6425. 

Quad-Cities Square Dance – Square dancers meet every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Royal Avenue Recreation Center. Open to singles and couples. Line dancing is also incorporated and fee classes offered during the “Introduction to Dance Night.” For more information call 256-760-6425.

Florence Alabama Swim Team -Swimming suspended at this time.

Tennessee River Woodcarvers – Shoals area woodcarvers meet at Royal Ave. Recreation Center the second and fourth Monday evening of each month from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. For information call 256-760-6425.
