Large Yard Waste/Curbside Trash Collection

Heavy Trash: Large yard waste, furniture, and material from minor household projects such as cabinets or toilets.

Placing Heavy Trash for Curbside Collection

  • Items shall be placed no more than two feet from the street’s edge and must be approximately five (5) feet from other obstacles such as mailboxes, utility poles, fences, and parked cars.
  • Avoid placing large brush and bulky items under low-hanging tree limbs, utility lines, or cables.
  • Do not place large trash or piles of trash on top of a water meter.

Trash Pile Dimensions

  • A pile (including brush) must not exceed four (4) feet high, ten (10) feet long, and five (5) feet deep.
  • If the pile exceeds these dimensions, it will NOT meet the requirements of acceptable heavy trash and will be left for disposal by the residential customer.
  • The City of Florence does not collect construction debris. Contractors are responsible for the disposal of construction and demolition debris.

Bagged Grass Clippings and Leaves

The City will pick up bagged grass clippings when they are placed at the curb away from obstacles (resolution April 1990).

Storm Debris Procedures

The Street Department clears trees, limbs, and other debris from city rights-of-way (ROW) after storms and other events causing road obstructions. Debris on private property remains the responsibility of the property owner. If a tree or limb falls onto private property, the department may wait for the owner or their contractor to move it off the property before removing any remaining portion from the ROW. Other ROW issues are handled on a case by case basis.

Homeowners and businesses with concerns about trees on the ROW should contact the Street Department. If necessary, the department will request Urban Forestry to inspect the tree and recommend trimming or removal. Healthy trees will not be removed.

Businesses, including apartments, churches, and non-profits, are responsible for the removal and disposal of all tree and yard debris from their own property.

Contractors working on private property and businesses are also responsible for hauling away all debris they generate, including tree and yard waste and construction materials. This is mandated by city code: Section 22-118, 22-119, and 22-120.
