Tracking Down Your Mosquito Problems

Do you have mosquitoes in your house and yard? You may be growing your own problem!
Mosquitoes…

  • can breed in as little as one-half cup of water!
  • like standing, stagnant water.
  • are 1/8-1/2” long and look like this at the water’s surface.
  • larvae and pupae will wiggle to the bottom of the container if disturbed.

Tips to eradicate mosquitoes from your yard without chemicals

  1. Potted Plants: Don’t overwater plants. Mosquitoes love the warm water in a plant’s drain pan.
  2. Ditches: Keep drainage ditches free of plants and debris so that water can flow freely following a rain.
  3. Low-lying Areas: Fill in tire tracks and puddles that create warm water nesting areas for mosquitoes.
  4. Gutters: Keep gutters free of leaves and debris so that water doesn’t stand in them.
  5. Pet Bowls: Change the water in your pet’s bowl as well as large animal troughs every day or two. Animals appreciate the fresh water and mosquitoes hate it.
  6. Yard Debris: Keep your yard free of anything that can hold water, such as tires, bowls and buckets.
  7. Rain Barrels: Cover rain barrels with screen to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.
  8. Wading Pools: Empty kids’ wading pools after use.
  9. Water Gardens: Add minnows to the water garden since they love to snack on mosquito larvae.
  10. Containers: Birdbaths, ashtrays, and other outdoor containers can become breeding grounds for mosquitos. Turn small containers over when not in use. Keep fresh water in bird baths or other water features.
  11. Tree Holes: Fill tree holes with sand or cement to eliminate standing water.
  12. Boats: Keep boats covered or overturned to keep water from collecting to make a perfect mosquito nursery.
  13. Slab Voids: Empty areas naturally occur under cement slabs over time. Since they fill with water, watch for them and fill with sand or cement.
